Properly preparing the potatoes makes a tasty salad.
The tenderness of cubed potatoes in potato salad greatly affects the dish's taste. Some people prefer their potatoes to have a firmer texture while others like the vegetable mushy. The tenderness comes from cooking the potatoes. The longer you boil potatoes, the softer they become. The potatoes do need to hold their shape, however, so the potato salad doesn't become flavored mashed potatoes. Cut the potatoes into cubes yourself or use frozen potatoes.
Instructions
1. Fill a saucepan 3/4 full of water. Place it over medium-high heat. Wait for the water to start boiling.
2. Peel the amount of potatoes the recipe calls for. Rinse the peeled potatoes. Place a potato on the cutting board. Slice it in half horizontally. Place the flat part of half of a potato on the cutting board. Cut the half into 1-inch-wide slices. Cut the slices into cubes by making cuts across the potato pieces. Cut the rest of the potatoes this way.
3. Pour the potatoes into the boiling water. Add a pinch of salt. Boil the potatoes for about 20 minutes, or until they are mostly tender.
4. Place a strainer into a sink. Turn off the stove burner. Pour the potatoes and water into the strainer. Wait for the potatoes to cool before using in potato salad.
