Homemade Seasonings







In any given grocery store, in the herbs and spices aisle, you'll see products like pumpkin pie spice or poultry seasoning right next to items like sage and anise. If you check the ingredients list in the back of either the sage or the anise, you'll read read one ingredient: sage or anise, respectively. On the back of the pumpkin pie or poultry seasoning, there will be multiple ingredients listed. These seasonings can easily be made at home.


Pumpkin Pie Spice


Pumpkin pie spice is a seasoning blend that is called for in pumpkin pie recipes. It also works on squash and baked apples or pears. Pumpkin pie spice is a mixture of ground cloves, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg. Combine 1/8 tsp. cloves, 1/8 tsp. nutmeg, 1/4 tsp. ginger and 1/2 tsp. cinnamon. Mix well. If you want a more even consistency, grind the mixture until it is very fine.


Poultry Seasoning








Poultry seasoning is a special blend of herbs that works well with chicken and turkey. Rub it on the outside of the bird before roasting or otherwise cooking the meat. It also works well in stuffing. Combine 2 tsp. sage, 1 1/2 tsp. thyme, 1 tsp. marjoram, 3/4 tsp. rosemary, 1/2 tsp. nutmeg and 1/2 tsp. black pepper. Mix well.


Seasoned Salt


Seasoned salt is a blend of salt and flavorings, resulting in a taste both salty and savory. Seasoned salt can be used in the place of salt in meat and vegetable dishes. It also works well over fries. Many store bought varieties contain MSG, but this is not a necessary ingredient for a homemade recipe. Combine 2 tbsp. salt, 2 tsp. sugar or Splenda, 1/2 tsp. paprika, 1/2 tsp. celery salt, 1/4 tsp. turmeric, 1/4 tsp. onion powder, 1/4 tsp. garlic powder and 1/4 tsp. cornstarch. Mix well.
