A red wine with a pasta dish
The long-held rule of pairing only red wine with red meat and white wine with fish has finally fallen by the wayside. Today, wine and food pairings attempt to match the flavors of each. Pairing wine with beef and noodles depends on your taste preference; however, if you're uncertain of what red or white wines to match with your beef and noodles, and if you're unfamiliar with the flavors, sticking with the tried-and-true will help avoid a disastrous taste combination.
Instructions
1. Choose a robust red wine if you are serving an expensive main dish meal of Chateaubriand, filet mignon, or medallions of beef with noodles in a shiitake cream sauce. A bold red that brings out the flavors of the beef and sauce will enhance the meal.
2. Read the wine labels if you know little to nothing about wines. Most wine bottle labels provide a wealth of information giving you nearly everything you need to know about the wine. Many wine bottle labels tell you where the wine is a bottled, the wine classification, its alcohol content, and lists what foods it best complements.
3. Choose a good red table wine if you're new to pairing wines and foods. Table wines are wines that go well with any type of meal. Table wines may be a blend of a variety of wines or grapes and pair well with anything ranging from beef and noodles to salads. If you prefer a full-bodied, complex flavor, choose a red wine with a label characterizing the flavor as such, or ask for recommendations at your place of purchase.
4. Match a specific wine with your beef and noodle dish. Some wine flavors pair better with classic dishes. They carry the names of wine grape varieties. A pinot noir pairs well with beef and noodles. Pinot noir tastes like black cherries and strawberries. Cabernet sauvignon tastes like black currant and chocolate. It enhances classic beef dishes such as stroganoff and pastas with rich sauces. Merlot, tastes like black cherries, plums, and coffee. It pairs well with beef and pasta. Shiraz/syrah, tastes like blackberries, black pepper, and licorice. It also complements beef and pasta dishes. Pinot Grigio has a light citrus, apricot, and melon taste and pairs well with pasta covered in rich cream sauces.
