An Avocado seed is the large pit in the center of the fruit.
Planting an avocado seed is a relatively easy process, but done in a less traditional way than sowing. The "seed" of the avocado fruit is the large pit that typically goes unused. After investing some extra time with the seed, it should begin sprouting and growing a healthy avocado tree.
Instructions
1. Take the avocado seed out of the fruit. Wash it with warm water to remove the slippery residue and make it easier to handle.
2. Place four toothpicks into the side of the pit, spaced evenly around it. The tip side should be facing upward and the picks should be about two-thirds up from the bottom of the pit.
3. Place the seed in the glass with the toothpicks resting on the glass lip. Fill the glass with water so that the bottom of the seed is covered. Leave the seed in this position for two to six weeks, or until it begins sprouting roots and leaves.
4. Pot the sprouted seed in moist soil. Position the tip of the seed so that it just peeks out of the soil. Keep the plant at a temperature of about 60 to 70 F.
5. Grow the plant in full sun and feed with a citrus fertilizer every several weeks. Organic fertilizers, such as coffee grounds or compost, can also be used for avocado trees. When adding the fertilizer, only use enough to lightly surround the tree. Dilute it by immediately adding water.
6. Transplant the sprout to a larger pot once it outgrows the existing pot, typically in the spring. Gradually increase the plant's outside exposure to sunlight until it can remain outside without drying out too quickly.
