Inlagd Sil is a traditional Swedish dish. It is herring pickled with vinegar, spices and onions. Herring has been a staple of Swedish foods for centuries. In countries with cold, dark winters like Sweden, fishing is very difficult, so salting, smoking and marinating preserved fish like herring is a necessity. Making Swedish Inlagd Sil is a moderately easy task if the below steps are followed.
Instructions
1. Soak the herring fillets in milk for 12 to 24 hours to desalt them. Once the herring fillets have been desalted, rinse them and pat them dry. Cut these fillets into 1/2-inch pieces.
2. Combine the water, light brown sugar, apple cider vinegar allspice, caraway seeds, mustard seeds and peppercorns together. Bring this mixture to a boil on the stove. Make sure the mixture cools completely. This will be the pickling solution.
3. Cut the red onions, carrots and horseradish into thin slices. Put the desalted herring, red onions, carrots, horseradish, dill and bay leaves in a jar.
4. Pour the pickling solution onto the herring, onions, carrots, horseradish, allspice, bay leaves and peppercorns in the jar. Make sure all of the ingredients are completely submerged in the pickling solution. Cover the herring mixture and refrigerate. Be sure to let this soak in the refrigerator overnight or for up to two days before eating.
