Make A Wood Tortilla Press

Tortillas are a Mexican meal staple. Corn is produced widely in Mexico and in great quantities. A homemade tortilla is at its best within a few hours after it is made, which is why many people have not had a good homemade one. Make your own using a wood tortilla press.

Instructions

1. Cut the 3-foot pine board into six pieces. The first piece will be 11 1/4 inches long. The second will be 9 5/8 inches long. The third will be 1 1/2 inches long. The fourth will be 3/4 inch long, and the fifth and sixth will be 2 1/4 inches long. Then cut down your wood dowel to 9 inches. This will complete the lumber preparation.

2. Place the longest piece on a sturdy, flat surface. This will form your base. Then take the 1 1/2-inch piece and glue it to the longest piece with the edges lined up. Then place two wood clamps on these pieces to keep them tight until they dry.

3. Glue the 3/4-inch piece to the 9 5/8-inch piece together lining up the edges. Secure these with two wood clamps until the glue is dry. This piece will be the top of your press.

4. Place the top assembly on top of the longest piece, and line up the edges. The ends that you line up should be opposite the end with the 3/4-inch piece. This 3/4-inch piece should be sticking up. Now that the ends are lined up, use the two hinges to attach the top and bottom parts together. This creates the press.

5. Line up the two 2 1/4-inch pieces together with the dowel in between them. The dowel should stick out about 1/2 inch on one side. Drill a hole 3/4 inch of the way up the small pieces. Drill clear through both blocks and the dowel. Now place the carriage bolt through the blocks and the dowel. Tighten the wing nut on the other end.

6. Glue the press handle assembly to the end of the bottom piece. The end that you glue the assembly to is the end opposite the hinges.
