The Bedford Wine Trail provides a tour of five wineries in southwest Virginia.
Southwest Virginia is home to the Bedford Wine Trail, five wineries located all along the Blue Ridge Mountains. They open their doors to the public for tours of the vineyards, wine tastings and events. Although the trail has only five wineries as of February 2010, more wineries are expected to open along the trail in the future.
Hickory Hill Vineyards & Winery
Hickory Hill Vineyards and Winery have been growing grapes since 1984 in the Smith Mountain Lake region of southwest Virginia. Its selection of wines includes a special Lake Series of wines that offers a light taste with fruity accents. Hickory Hill's other wines include Chardonnay, Vidal Blanc, local Merlot, Cabernet Franc and an award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon. Hickory Hill offers winery tours and tastings between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m Thursdays through Mondays from April to November and during the same hours on Saturdays in December and March.
Leo Grande Vineyard & Winery
Leo Grande Vineyards and Winery is located on a farm in Goode, Va. Since its small start on only 3 acres of land, the property has grown into a farm of 400 acres. It also raises cattle and breeding horses. During a visit to the Leo Grande Vineyard and Winery, you can view the vineyards and animals and sample the winery's variety of red and white local wine. The tasting room is open all year from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Peaks of Otter Winery
The Peaks of Otter Winery, located in Bedford, Va., has a wine club that offers exclusive discounts and various prizes to its members and emails updates about the winery and farm. The winery produces and sells a variety of red, white and fruit-based wines, such as apple, mango, strawberry and peach. It is open daily between noon and 5:00 p.m from April to December and during the same hours on weekends from January to March. You can also arrange private appointments.
Savoy-Lee Winery
The family-owned Savoy-Lee Winery, located in Huddleston, Va., offers tastings of its red and white wines. This winery hosts many personal events, celebrations, reunions and private parties. Its tasting room is open to the public on the weekends from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. or by appointment.
White Rock Vineyards & Winery
White Rock Vineyards and Winery, located in Bedford County, Va., is also family owned. It offers five vinifera wine varieties: Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Gris, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, as well as two hybrid wines, Traminette and Chardonell. The winery is open between noon and 5:00 p.m. Thursdays through Mondays from April through November and during the same hours on the first weekend in December. You can also schedule private appointments.
