Rock Lobster Information
The rock lobster, also known as the Southern rock lobster or crayfish, is native to Tasmania, New South Wales, and South and Western Australia. The United States is one of the largest importers of rock lobsters.
Characteristics
The rock lobster grows to around 8 inches long. It is a greenish brown with orange legs. The rock lobster has a segmented body. Its head consists of a pointed snout and eyes that are on stalks.
Habitat
These rock lobsters live in several different habitats, but they dwell mostly on the continental shelf. They prefer water depths of any where from 3.5 feet to 650 feet deep.
Diet
These carnivorous rock lobsters eat mollusks and small crustaceans, as well as echinoderms, and benthic invertebrates.
Season
The rock lobster fishing season begins in October and ends in April.
Fishing
Fisherman use pots made of wood, cane or steel to catch rock lobsters. They use whole fish or fish heads as bait.
