Tropical Rum Drinks

Rum, an alcoholic beverage, is derived from the distillation of sugarcane and molasses. Rum comes from quite a few different regions in the world, such as the Caribbean, Cuba, Guyana and Asia. This makes rum a delightfully exotic addition to tropical mixed drinks. Knowing about some of the different tropical rum drinks gives you the ability to order creatively when you're out or to make your own to dazzle your guests.

Rum Daiquiri

A rum daiquiri contains lime juice, light rum, crushed ice and a dash of sugar for taste. Other variations of the rum daiquiri include fruit and extra shots of various alcoholic drinks. For example a banana daiquiri uses the base recipe, but adds a shot of banana liquor and a half shot of triple sec. Heavy cream is added to the blended mixture to give it a dessert-like appearance, flavor and texture. In addition to the banana daiquiri, other fruits are added to this tropical rum drink. Coconut, peach, mango, papaya and the popular strawberry daiquiri differ slightly in recipe.

Mai Tai

A shot of amber rum, a shot of dark rum, a shot of triple sec and a shot of orgeat syrup combine to create a powerful and rich combination of liquors. These liquors are blended with two shots of whiskey sour mix and is served in crushed or cubed ice. The mai tai seems complicated with its many ingredients but it's easy to figure it out and mix it with consistency each time you make one.

Tropical Storm

The tropical storm is a delicious tropical rum drink that combines the flavors of various fruits with the intoxicating flavors of rum. Mix two shots of coconut rum with a shot of triple sec and 4 ounces of fruit juice. The fruit juice blend, which can be found in grocery stores, is orange, pineapple and banana. This tasty tropical rum drink is poured over crushed ice for an invigoratingly cold beverage.
