New York City is famous for many things. One of those things include delicatessens, also known as delis. From pastrami sandwiches, potato pancakes, corned beef and all the food delights in between, New York City is the place to be if you want to revel in some classic, good old fashioned deli goodness. Finding New York City's Best Delis!
1. Go to Katz's Delicatessen (205 East Houston Street). Katz's is probably the best known of all of the famed New York City delicatessens, and the locale for a famous "When Harry Met Sally" scene. Be sure to try the hand carved meats. The portions are extremely generous, so stop by on an empty stomach.
2. Stop by Carnegie Deli (854 7th Avenue). With its bustling midtown location, Carnegie Deli is a convenient place to stop and have a classic deli lunch. Often crowded, this deli has been in existence since 1937. Be sure to check out the classic "mile high" pastrami sandwich. The cheesecake is also a must-have.
3. Visit Ben's Delicatessen (209 West 38th Street). Ben's is another quintessential New York deli located in midtown. Serving up all the classics (pastrami on rye, stuffed cabbage, potato pancakes), this roomy restaurant is a great place to meet up with a large group of friends and have a fantastic time.
4. Have lunch at Junior's! (386 Flatbush Avenue). Originally located in Brooklyn, there now is a Manhattan branch to this deli. Known for its glorious cheesecake, this deli/diner is full of New York City charm. The matzo ball soup isn't too shabby either. Though the Manhattan location (Times Square) is excellent, try to dine at the original Brooklyn location if possible (the authenticity can not be beat).
5. Go to Barney Greengrass (541 Amsterdam Avenue). This Upper West Side deli is known for its smoked salmon, sturgeon, cheese blintzes, and chopped liver. Barney's is a wonderful breakfast and lunch option, and the classic deli food selection is a cut above the rest. Make sure not to miss out on the deli delights of Barney's Greengrass.
