If you have Swedish relatives, especially Swedish in-laws, coming over for dinner, impress them by making Swedish Bruna Bonor. Swedish Bruna Bonor, or Swedish Brown Beans, is a traditional and delicious addition to any meal and one your guests will talk about for years to come.
Instructions
1. Place the beans in a strainer. Wash them thoroughly and drain the water.
2. Put the beans in a large pot and add 7 cups of water.
3. Let the beans stand covered overnight.
4. Bring the beans to a simmer the next day.
5. Make sure the cover is on the pot very tightly and let the beans simmer until they're tender. This should take about 3 to 3 1/2 hours.
6. Mix in the sugar, vinegar, syrup, salt and nutmeg. Then mix together your cornstarch with 1 tbsp. of cold water. Mix this in with the beans.
7. Simmer the beans for another 15 minutes uncovered. The beans are done once they have thickened. You may need to add a bit more cornstarch if the beans aren't thick enough.
8. Serve the Swedish Bruna Bonor hot. This should make about 8 to 12 servings.
