Pillow Stuffing Techniques

Pillows are an economical way to give your home a flair that shows your personality and sense of style. Fabric stores offer a wide range of materials that can be used to make pillows in the size and shape you desire. There are also numerous options for stuffing the pillows to make them either a simple flat, or puffy, fluff-able cushion.

Instructions

1. Create the pillow shape that you wish to stuff. Patterns are available for everything from a simple flat pillow to complicated three-corner shapes, along with novelty shapes like hearts and diamonds.

2. Choose from the various types of foam sheets available for flat pillows, such as those used for sleeping or crib pillows. The foam sheets can range from inexpensive fiber foam to the more expensive memory foam. Cut the sheet to the desired size to fit your pillow sleeve and sew the open end closed for a finished pillow.

3. Fill the pillow sleeve with down feathers or shredded fiberfill for a pillow that can be fluffed and scrunched into comfortable shapes. Stuff as much of the fiberfill or feathers as possible into the sleeve and then sew the open end closed.

4. Stuff the pillow sleeve with old clothing to make overstuffed pillows for a child or teen’s room. Be sure to remove any buttons or zippers from the clothing before stuffing so that the pillows will be comfortable to sit and lay on. Pillows stuffed with old material can be thrown in the washer and dryer over and over again when needed.
