What is a Springform Pan?
A springform pan is typically a circular pan. The base of the pan and the rim can detach from one another. The defining feature of a springform pan is the clamp located on the rim of the pan. This clamp allows the rim of the pan to expand and release from the base.
Clamp
The rim of the pan can be removed or attached when the clamp located on the rim is opened or closed. This action allows the rim of the pan to expand and the base to become separate. When closed, the clamp securely attaches the rim of the pan to the base. When open, the clamp allows for the base of the pan to release.
Rim
The rim of the pan creates a seal around the base of the pan when the clamp is secure. The rim of the pan must be secure before filling the pan and during baking. When the clamp is open, the rim of the pan can be removed without disturbing the baked item.
Base
The base of the pan can be removed completely from the rim. This allows for delicate baked goods, such as cheese cake, to be removed from the pan easily without damaging the cake. Baked items can also be removed from the base of the pan easily with the aid of a spatula.
