Hummus is a flavored chickpea mash.
Hummus is a Middle Eastern dip or spread made of mashed chickpeas, tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, garlic and salt. While every recipe has its own take on hummus, they all contain varying ratios of the same basic ingredients. Many people pass up hummus because it looks bland -- it is often served garnished with anything from paprika or pepper flakes to sliced peppers or whole chickpeas and often in a colorful bowl. Hummus can be served with many different things.
Bread
Hummus is often served with warm pita bread wedges, especially in traditional cuisine restaurants. It can be eaten with crostini, crisp toasted French bread that serves as a platform for many spreads. Melba toast is also an option more popular in Western Europe.
Chips
It is also within traditional use to serve hummus with baked pita chips. Used as a more Americanized dip, tortilla chips and crackers are also common companions.
Vegetables
Fresh vegetables are a popular choice for dipping in hummus. Carrots, sweet potato wedges, celery and cucumbers are dipped in hummus while tomatoes and peppers are often filled with the spread.
Other Applications
Though typically used as a dip, hummus is also used as a spread on a sandwich, used as filling for a pastie and in deviled eggs.
