Guide To Bar Glasses

A well-stocked bar has at least a dozen different types of glasses based on the types of beverages served. Most bar glasses fit into one of three major categories.

Liquor Glasses

Basic liquor glasses have a simple shape -- straight or slightly tapered with no special base. Shot glasses are the smallest and hold a single shot of liquor. Larger glasses include 6-oz., old fashioned glasses, 8- to 12-oz. highball glasses and 14- to 16-oz. Collins glasses. Shaped martini, margarita and hurricane glasses are used for specialty drinks of the same names.

Wine Glasses

Wine is typically served in stemware -- bar glasses with long stems. Red wine glasses are typically wider than white wine glasses to allow oxygen to reach the wine. Champagne flutes are tall and slender to accentuate bubble displays.

Beer Glasses

Beer is often served in tall, tapered glasses. Pilsner glasses are tapered at the bottom and have bases like wine glasses. Ale glasses are rounded at the bottom like wine glasses. Beer mugs have handles.
