Store Lettuce In The Refrigerator

Lettuce makes a healthy addition to any meal.

Though there are many prewashed lettuces for sale that will save you time in the kitchen, they are most often sprayed with chemicals to retard spoilage. These chemicals can give the lettuce an "off" taste that many people find unpleasant. Preparing lettuce to store it in the refrigerator takes only a small amount of time and you can ensure that you are not eating any extra chemicals. Different types of lettuce do require slightly different types of preparation for storage in the refrigerator.

Instructions

1. Remove the core of iceberg lettuce by grasping the head of lettuce and hitting the core against the counter top. Lift out the core. Rinse the head under running water. Drain the lettuce core side down in a colander. Dry with a paper towels or a salad spinner. Wrap the lettuce in dry paper towels. Place in a resealable plastic bag, getting as much air out as possible. Store in the refrigerator for up to five days.

2. Wash Romaine and Leaf lettuce in cold water. Dry with paper towels or a salad spinner. Store in the vegetable drawer of the refrigerator in a plastic bag or wrapped in damp paper towels for two to three days.

3. Wrap the roots of arugula, watercress and other types of greens in a damp paper towel. Place in a resealable plastic bag and store in the vegetable drawer of the refrigerator. Ideally these should be eaten the same day they are purchased.
