Where Did Psychology Originate?


The quick answer is that psychology originated in philosophy within ancient civilizations. Broad universal questions soon developed into a tangent with questions pertaining to the human condition.








Roots in Philosophy


Humans began to ponder about the human condition within the realms of philosophy. This could be found in ancient civilizations, such as Egypt, Greece, China, India, and Persia.


Transition into Science


In the medieval ages, psychology began a more experimental and clinical approach with Muslim physicians who built psychiatric hospitals.


First Experiment


The first psychological experiment dates back to 1021 with the Book of Optics by Alhazen.


Father of Psychology


Wilhelm Wundt is considered to be the "Fater of Psychology". He began the independent and experimental form of study in 1879.








Principles of Psychology


William James' Principles of Psychology in 1890 laid out the foundations of Psychology.
